The question I get asked the most as I travel around the country is, “What happens when we sin?” That’s the constant question! It’s like we are totally obsessed with sin as evangelicals. God is not obsessed by sin because He’s not like us. He is not an evangelical. He’s not a charismatic, either! He’s above labels like that. He is not obsessed by sin, He dealt with it once and for all, and is not dealing with it again, and is very happy about it.
Jesus ministers from that law of love so in Christ we have a life in God that looks beyond sin to righteousness. If sin is still between you and God, then you need a fresh revelation of the power of the Cross because the Cross makes an end. He that is dead is freed from sin. Romans 6:10 says, He died to sin once and for all. What does that even mean, ‘once and for all’? I think it means ‘once and for all!’ I think it means it’s like God saying, “It’s done, it’s finished, it’s over. Can we just move on?”
Can we move away from sin as an obsession? How about we become obsessed with righteousness? How about we become obsessed with the new man? How about we lay aside the old, be renewed in the spirit of our mind, and put on the new (Ephesians 4:20-24)? How about we choose not to work on the old man? How about we just work on the new one because the old one is dead? How about we don’t resurrect him because we don’t want to be grave robbers. Because when you bring your old man up before God and you start talking about him, it’s like you’ve been out there the night before and you’ve dug him up! “This is my old man.”And Jesus says, “Well, can you take him away because he smells! Take that thing away! I’ve dealt with that once and for all. We’re only dealing with this…”
So we’re learning about the power of the new covenant and the fact that ‘once and for all’ means that God has dealt with it and He doesn’t want to be bothered with it anymore. Romans 6:7 says Sin has been done away with. So God isn’t going to bring it back into fashion. It’s done away with, it’s finished. We’re now dealing with this new man. We’re dealing with identity, we’re not dealing with behavior.
